Despite what many believe, which is that the earth is a sphere; there are many out there that have adopted the long forgotten theory of a flat earth. These flat earthers as we call them, believe that everything that we have learned in school and science in general is a lie. NASA is a lie as well, according to the theorists, and everything including the moon landing has been faked.
What is the Flat Earth Theory?
According to Wikipedia, the flat earth is “an archaic conception of Earth’s shape as a plane or disk”. This meaning that earth is in fact not spherical. The theory stemmed from ancient times when philosophers and astronomers took a look at the earths surface, deeming it to be flat and therefore came up with the theory of a flat earth. It was logical at the time; however now, with advancements in technology, we are clearly able to see that the earth has curvature to it. This can be proven with satellite pictures from space, and even the taping of the moon landing. Earth can be seen from outer space, even from the moon, as a sphere. It is also said that “The leading flat-earther theory holds that Earth is a disc with the Arctic Circle in the center and Antarctica, a 150-foot-tall wall of ice, around the rim.” They are also claiming that the ice wall is surrounded by security just in case anyone gets curious and wants to climb off the “edge” of the earth. Additionally, the fact that planes can’t fly over Antarctica supports their theory because in their eyes, it proves that the government is trying to hide something. Are they trying to hide the flat earth perhaps?
“Proof”
The flat earth believers have “proof” for everything, or at least explanations for everything. They believe that gravity is NOT what we say it is. Instead of earth’s gravitational pull coming from the rotation, those who believe in the flat earth suggest, “Earth’s gravity is an illusion, they say. Objects do not accelerate downward; instead, the disc of Earth accelerates upward at 32 feet per second squared (9.8 meters per second squared), driven up by a mysterious force called dark energy”. Excuse me, but what the heck is dark energy and where is the explanation for where that comes from? You can’t just make shit up flat earthers! I don’t think that’s how it works.
Another thing that they have a breakdown for is earth’s day and night cycles. They state, “Earth’s day and night cycle is explained by positing that the sun and moon are spheres measuring 32 miles (51 kilometers) that move in circles 3,000 miles (4,828 km) above the plane of the Earth. (Stars, they say, move in a plane 3,100 miles up)”. This just makes absolutely no sense to me and it baffles me that some people actually believe in this theory based on the “evidence” provided. There is no science to back any of their claims and to me that is simply absurd.
Huge Following
Despite the shitty evidence that is provided here, more people follow this theory than you may think. There just so happens to be a facebook page and a twitter both supporting this theory of the flat earth. One article regarding the flat earth theory actually states, “So how on Earth (the round one) do they have over 68,000 followers on their Facebook page, and almost 12,000 followers on Twitter?”… and its a good inquiry. Why is such an outrageous out of date theory so popular in todays society. Theres a simple answer to this: we love to be different.
Since the mass majority of human beings believe that the earth is round, it only makes sense that some people will step out of the box and believe in something so outrageous just to be different than the rest. It’s also a way for people to go against the government and believe in the fact that the government and NASA is lying to us. To a certain extent, I understand and relate to distrust in the government. We know that they hide certain things from us already. Why not believe that they lie and hide the fact that the earth is flat? Either way it is something to think about and its an interesting topic to debate.
