Skool sux am I rite college kids?!

Being a good college student is hard! And trust me I’m not one to talk. My first year of college was rough and although I went to a community college it was still very difficult to keep up with the work compared to high-school. I could barely keep up with one class let alone five! Its a tough world out there but hopefully some of these tips and tricks will help you to get through your freshman year of college and you can continue to apply these concepts throughout your college career.

An overview of the tips to being a better college student:

  1. Choose the right classes!
  2. Attend your classes
  3. Study the right way
  4. Have a set schedule (but make time for friends)

  1. Choosing the right classes may seem difficult at first but if you have an advisor I advise you to speak with them prior to choosing classes. Don’t make the same mistakes that I’ve been making. I may have my life on track now but before hand I refused to listen to my advisors for help. In reality, you cant choose the right classes for yourself by yourself; you may need some assistance. You just have to trust that your advisors know what they’re talking about and that they have your best interest in mind when it comes to these things.

2. Even if your professor does not take attendance or require it in the syllabus I recommend attending classes regularly unless you become very sick. Classes in college, especially lecture halls, may cover a lot of content in one class period which you do not want to miss. You will be more likely to retain the information by regularly attending class and you wont miss any important announcements the professor may have either. This is a good tip to help keep yourself on top of your work and its so simple: JUST ATTEND YOUR CLASSES!

3. The way that I recommend studying may not be the most traditional way that most college students study but it is definitely a lot more effective to most people. Instead of cramming for that exam that you’ve put off studying for all week, how about you take 20 minutes out of each day to go over some of the material so you don’t hurt your brain by studying all at once?? It is actually extremely effective to study in 20-30 minute increments rather than cramming. Cramming can hurt your brain and ultimately make the information slip your mind much easier than encoding the information in your brain for about 20 minutes at a time. You can even try studying in one single day for something but make sure to take breaks in between those 20-30 minute increments of studying. It’ll help a lot.

4. Having a set schedule is important for college. It generally motivates us to get things done. If you write a to-do list or make yourself a set schedule each week then you’re more likely to follow this routine and not slack off. After a while your schedule practically becomes habit and you start to do it automatically, making you a better student overall. Make sure to allow time for social obligations as well as working out if your schedule permits because this helps your overall mental health and de-stresses you from all the work that college throws at you from day to day. Don’t forget to have fun!
